Episode 164 - Andy Jones-Wilkins
This week Eugene and Matt are joined by a true legend of our sport, Andy Jones-Wilkins. AJW (as he is known) began running ultramarathons in 1996 as a way to maintain fitness in between transcontinental cycling trips with his wife, Shelly. AJW was a stalwart top-ten finisher at Western States in the early 2000’s, finishing in the top ten seven consecutive times with a career-best second place to the mighty Scott Jurek in 2005. Andy has just celebrated ten years of his column “AJW’s Taproom” on iRunfar, and is a frequent contributor to the grandpappy of all trail podcasts Trail Runner Nation. Andy’s professional life has been in education and this shines through in this incredible conversation. We talk about his history in the sport, how he feels after 30 years in the sport, his first 12 hour race, his greatest beer ever, and his encyclopedic knowledge of the Western States Endurance Run course. Enthusiastic, affable, and so knowledgeable, this conversation was such a tonic and we hope you love it too. Enjoy!
